About readbannedbooks.org
What readbannedbooks.org is
readbannedbooks.org is the public site for Read Banned Books, an editorial archive of books whose circulation has been blocked, limited, or publicly threatened. The catalog is built so a reader can see the work, the documented restriction, and the source in one place.
This is not a bookstore and not a ranking of scandal. It is a readable record: titles, authors, contexts, and links to an available edition when the catalog file supplies one.
What you will find
The catalog lists works documented as banned, restricted, or at risk in libraries. Each entry can include publication facts, themes, a short description, and the geographic or institutional scope of the restriction.
Search by title, author, ISBN, country, or theme. Filters run in the browser, so the full list stays readable below the search tools.
Why the catalog exists
Book challenges and removals are often discussed as slogans. Read Banned Books exists to keep the underlying works visible: who wrote them, what they are about, and where a restriction was documented. A local school decision is not presented as a nationwide ban.
The site is for readers, teachers, librarians, and anyone who wants a sourced starting point instead of a rumor.
How to use the site
Start on the catalog or open a title from the home shelf. Each book page collects the documented restrictions and, when a source URL exists, opens that source in a new tab.
Amazon links, when they exist, are copied from the catalog file. Read Banned Books never builds a product URL from an ISBN. Those links may become affiliate links.
Editorial limits
By editorial choice, Read Banned Books does not list obscene books, or books that concern religion or children.
The catalog mainly lists books about freedom of expression and the excesses of totalitarian regimes.
A restriction is included only if it can be tied to a source. Uncertain information is flagged or omitted. The catalog is not exhaustive.
Status labels, scope fields, and sourcing rules are described on the methodology page.
