About Read Banned Books

Why this catalog

Read Banned Books documents works whose circulation has been blocked, limited, or publicly threatened. This site is not a store: it is an editorial archive. Each entry aims to make the context of a restriction readable, not to sensationalize a title.

For a broader introduction to the project, see about readbannedbooks.org .

What the statuses mean

  • Banned - the work is documented as banned in the stated scope.
  • Restricted - access, sale, distribution, school use, university use, or library presence is subject to a documented restriction.
  • At risk - a documented proceeding or campaign could have led to a restriction. This status is never assigned on a hunch.

What the catalog does not list

By editorial choice, Read Banned Books does not list obscene books, or books that concern religion or children.

The catalog mainly lists books about freedom of expression and the excesses of totalitarian regimes.

Method and limits

A restriction is included only if it can be tied to a source. A local ban is not presented as national: the "scope" field (national, regional, school, university, library, distribution) exists to avoid that conflation. Uncertain information is flagged as such, or omitted.

The catalog is not exhaustive.

Sources and Amazon

Sources open in a new tab. Amazon links, when they exist, are those supplied in the catalog file: Read Banned Books never builds a URL from an ISBN. These links may become affiliate links.
